As a parent, it’s in your intuition to protect your family safe from harm, and while you cannot prevent every single thing from happening, there are specific things you can do to give your family the best chance of a happy and healthy future as well as protecting them from harm. During the past few months, in particular, as the COVID-19 pandemic has swept across the globe, it has certainly put health and wellbeing at the top of the priority list on many families’ agendas.

In this guide, we’re going to provide a shortlist of how you can protect your family:

Establish home safety

While you may like to believe that your home is completely safe from outsiders, the reality is usually very different. Taking this note on board, you need to ensure that you protect your home from burglars. Make sure that the doors and windows are locked at all times and install floodlighting around the property to alert you of any intruders who may be lurking outside.

Although you may not feel comfortable putting a plan in place if an intruder breaks, it would be highly advisable to ensure that everyone’s health and wellbeing is protected. Calmly discuss each person’s responsibilities and how the situation would be dealt with if it was ever to occur.

Be prepared for fires

While house fires are not the most common of hazards, they are very easily started. Most deaths caused by fire are the result of people trying to cook or smoke while drunk. However, electrical hazards are also a common occurrence that can break out into a fire at any given time. Ensure that both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are fitted both downstairs and upstairs in the property to alert you of fire instantly.

Life insurance

It’s not something you ever like to think about, but have you ever considered what may happen to your family if you pass away? When you think about what could be around the corner, it certainly puts life into perspective and makes you question how your family would cope without you; especially if they are finically dependent on your income. It is worthwhile to take out life insurance to cover you if the worst-case scenario were to happen. My Tribe Life Insurance gives you a list of different companies and policies to find an option that is suitable for your family.

Watch out for choking hazards

Between the ages of 0-4, the leading cause of death in children is choking and suffocation. You need to be mindful of the most common causes and aim to avoid them where possible. When putting your child to sleep in their cot, always ensure they’re laid on their back to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and keep blind cords and toys away from their sleeping area.
Be mindful of objects in reach around the house which they may pick up and put into their mouth and introduce solid foods into their diet slowly, such as fruit, vegetables, and sweets to prevent choking.
