There is something both exciting and overwhelming about planning a big family trip. You picture the moments, the fun, the perfect candid pictures, and the “this will be amazing” feeling. But nobody really warns you that getting there could feel like a full-time job.
Having done it a couple of times – the chaos, forgotten socks, last-minute panics, and unexpected laughs – I wish somebody had warned me beforehand (honest mum-to-mum). This is where motorhome insurance becomes part of that early planning checklist.
Packing Always Takes Twice as Long as You Think
You think you are all organised and will even prepare a to-do list. You might even think you can pack the night before. You cannot! And with multiple children, there are always different needs, different opinions, different snacks, different entertainment, and someone will need that specific toy at the last minute.
What actually happens: You will probably forget something, unpack something, maybe pack again, and then start all over again.
Half of the luggage will be filled with snacks, for that “just in case” situation.
Tip: Always start packing earlier than you think you need to, and add another day. Trust me.

The Hidden Costs Add Up Quickly
After you have carefully curated the budget, extra costs still somehow creep in. It’s never just the accommodation fare or parking fee. It’s the snacks and drinks at the petrol pump, entry fees, and those little treats your kids want and you can’t say no to, because it’s a holiday!
I’ve learned to keep a sharp eye out for days out deals before we leave, as paying full price at the gate for a large family can blow the budget in minutes.
The sneaky extras include:
- Extra luggage
- Travel snacks (that somehow disappear instantly)
- Emergency purchases
- Activities that you didn’t pre-book.
Long Journeys Feel Very Long With Children
No matter how excited the kids are, they will eventually get bored. What may look like a manageable drive can feel endless when you are travelling with kids asking, “Are we nearly there yet?” after every 15 minutes. Toddlers become restless, adults are glued to their screens until the batteries die, and everyone gets hungry at different times, wanting different snacks.
What helps? Packing a few colouring books, audiobooks, travel games, and soft toys. Take small breaks (even if you feel you don’t need one)
Plus snacks. Always pack some snacks.
“Reality check“: Even the best-planned trips will have a moment when everyone will feel over it – and that’s perfectly fine.

Catering for Different Ages Is a Balancing Act
If your children are of different ages, planning a trip that suits everyone can feel like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces. Younger children need naps and their routine. Older ones want activities and independence. Teenagers might just want Wi-Fi and snacks.
What helps in that case? Planning a mix of activities that both younger and older children would enjoy. Let each child choose at least one activity for themselves during the trip; equality helps avoid jealousy and tantrums. Keep low expectations, as you cannot have every day ending perfectly as you planned. Sometimes things do not end up as planned, but remember it’s alright.
Flexibility Is Your Best Friend
I will admit this has not been easy for me to accept, but flexibility is genuinely vital. Despite all your meticulous planning, things will not always go smoothly: the weather may change suddenly, or the children may tire sooner than expected. Everything will seem crowded at those Instagram locations.
The best advice is to take nothing too seriously and not pack everything you think might come in handy.
And some of the best moments are created from the most unexpected, unplanned ones.

The Practical Admin Is Easy to Forget (But So Important)
This one easily gets pushed aside until something goes wrong. If you are travelling in a campervan or motorhome, it’s worth double-checking the basics, including having the right motorhome insurance, as it’s one of those important details that can save you a lot of stress if something unexpected happens on the road. Make sure you also cover your travel documents, health essentials, medication, and a pre-journey vehicle check.
You Will Feel Stressed at Some Point
Even on that one trip you have been planning for months, there will be times when someone will not agree, someone might cry – probably you, something might not go as planned. But it doesn’t mean that the trip isn’t wonderful. It just means it’s a real-life trip with kids, slightly different from those movies.
The Chaos Is Part of the Magic
The truth is, big family trips aren’t perfect. Instead, they can get messy, noisy, and occasionally stressful, but still wonderful in ways that are hard to describe.

Final Thought
Planning the big family holiday is not about doing things perfectly. It is about enjoying the lovely moments as a family on a trip. This is because many years down the line, when you reflect, you will not think of the stressful times of packing and preparing for the trip. Instead, all you will remember are the lovely moments you had as a family.
