However, the northern areas are often overlooked, with plenty of people focusing on Southern spots and hot tourist locations. Newcastle Upon Tyne - North East of England

Newcastle

A historical location in the heart of the North East Newcastle is a fabulous location for a weekend away and city break. Here you will be able to explore some of the finest examples of Georgian architecture. It is also known as a hub for shopping, with many independent retailers as well as well known high street stores. There is also an abundance of bars and restaurants which you would expect in such a happening city. There is such a diverse range of things to do and see in the area, it is the perfect spot for your weekend away and to enjoy a night on the “toon” as the Geordies would say. 

Durham

Another great city in the North East is Durham. There is a real historical feel to this place, and you can easily get lost in the feeling of it all. It is the ultimate spot for any Harry Potter fan. You can head to the Chapter House and Cathedral Cloisters for the ultimate experience. You might also like to climb the Cathedrals 324 steps if you are feeling energetic. There is also an abundance of shops, bars, and restaurants, making it a fabulous base for a weekend away. 

Northumberland 

Here you will be able to unearth some of the most incredible historical sites in the area. Northumberland is a treasure trove of scenic spots and beautiful locations waiting to be explored by you on your next weekend adventure. It is the northernmost county of England and has over 2000 square miles of countryside, towns, and villages. There are award-winning coastlines and rolling countryside hills as far as the eye can see. It is an area that really has it all. One of the highlights would be to walk and explore the famous Hadrian’s wall or make a stop and head to Holy Island, a place that can only be accessed at low tide. 

South Shields

If you were hoping to find a place where you can enjoy a typical seaside resort in the North East of England then south Shields is the place to head to. Beautiful white sandy beaches and amazing coastlines to enjoy, there really is something for everyone here. There are some quaint little villages and places for you to roam and explore, offering up lots to do, plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants. It is a fabulous location in the North East and perfect for a weekend away. 

Whitley Bay

If you were hoping for a lovely seaside location, but don’t want a busy seaside resort, then Whitely Bay is the one to choose. There is incredible scenery to explore and things to see and do in the area. Walking along the beach, setting up to enjoy the sun, or heading into the brisk North Sea, it is a fabulous place to head to for a quiet weekend by the sea. 

Yorkshire

We have to take a moment to mention Yorkshire. It is one of those areas that is predominantly associated with the North East, but it is the southern point of the area. The Yorkshire Dales is vast and wide, with many gorgeous villages and places to see. Along with some of the best walking trails and hiking opportunities, and plenty of camping options as well as gorgeous cosy cottages and hotels to stay in. There is also plenty of things to see and do, and so it coils be the ideal place for you to make a weekend of it. In Yorkshire, you also have Leeds which is a fantastic city with lots to see and do.
