Being a new mum can be a totally overwhelming experience. Life, as you know it is flipped upside down and all of your usual priorities, are thrown straight out of the window! Watching on as a friend or loved one battle through the trials and tribulations of new motherhood can inspire you to want to offer a helping hand, but it can often seem tricky to figure out how you can assist and support them in their journey.

Luckily, it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might expect to figure out how you can help a new mum, as there are a few key areas in which you can focus your efforts to lift a little weight off their shoulders in no time at all. So, if you would like to find out more, then simply read on.

A Self-Care Box

There’s no doubt about the fact that any new mum will be focusing so heavily on taking care of their baby, putting their own needs as the last priority. However, it’s absolutely vital that they can still make time to indulge in a little self-care, so providing them with all of the materials that they need to do so might just open up the opportunity they need to treat themselves!

Creating a kind of self-care box that they can dip into whenever they have a spare moment will be such a thoughtful gift, and it couldn’t be easier to source some brilliant products that they’re sure to love. Start off by investing in a few luxurious face masks, along with some cooling eye pads that can relieve tiresome eyes. Add in a couple of natural bath bombs, perhaps those with lavender for a hint of relaxation, so that they can have a well-deserved soak after a long day looking after their little one. Extras such as hand cream or lip balm are a bonus, but you can pick and choose to suit your loved ones individual preferences.

If you don’t have the time to create your own self-care box from scratch then do not fret, as you can easily find a ready-made new baby hamper that contains a mix of self-care products with extras for their little one thrown in too.

Involve Them In Your Plans

It can be so hard to remain socially active during pregnancy, as there are many symptoms that can prevent you from leaving the house. This can have a dramatic impact on both mental and physical health, as you need social interaction to stay sane! Making an effort to involve a new mum in your plans will give them the opportunity to ease them back into the world at their own pace, as they can accept or decline your offer in order to start socialising once more.

Plans don’t always have to involve ‘going out’ to pubs, bars or clubs, as this may not be something they’re quite ready to do, but don’t be afraid to extend an invitation as they may find it the perfect chance to let off some steam. Whether you go out for coffee and a slice of cake and a coffee, a walk around a local natural beauty spot or a day of retail therapy, they’re sure to appreciate your efforts to help provide an escape.

Check In Often

Checking in on a new mum to see whether they’re feeling good is always important, as the risk of experiencing things like postnatal depression and the effects of isolation is constant. Taking the time to do something as simple as sending a text message to see how they’re doing is enough to remind them that they’re not alone in their journey!

You could plan a video call so that you get to see each other’s facial expressions, as this makes it more personal (and you may be able to see whether they’re struggling, even if they don’t have the courage to let you know). If they’re not an avid social media user or don’t often check their phone, then sending them a letter might just be a brilliant option. There are so many ways to check in on your new mum friend, so don’t forget to send a little love their way to let them know that you’re thinking of them.

Helping a new mum has never been so simple when you can take the time to utilise some of the brilliant ideas that have been carefully detailed above.
