Thomas & Friends: Thomas’ Big Pop-Up Journey

I think it is fair to say that Thomas & Friends is part of our family, from Mr Boo’s childhood love of the No. 1 engine and his friends.  To Roo’s love of the trains as pre-schooler, to Tigger who has really made the little engines his friends and knew all the names and numbers of them before learning about anything else.

Thomas & Friends is brought to life via the TV series, the special feature-length films and of course getting up close to them at Thomas Land, Drayton Manor.  One way to bring the magic of Thomas & Friends alive time and time again is the amazing range of Thomas & Friends books.  Being able to sit down and enjoy the stories from the Island of Sodor over and over again.  There is a new book on the bookshelf from Thomas & Friends and this one is interactive and one to get the children’s imagination running wild.

Includes:

  • Storage book box
  • Thomas’ Big Pop-Up Journey which folds out to create a 3D playmat
  • Pop-up accessories; Thomas and Annie (no Clarabel), Percy, James, Toby, Harold and the Fat Controller

The book unfolds to create a 3D playmat that houses different pop-up models from around the island.  Including Cranky the crane, Captain in the harbour by the lighthouse and the children waving on the bridge as the engines go by.

The play pieces are stored within an envelope inside the front cover of the storage book/box which helps keep them together when it’s time to put the pop-up book away for another day.  The play pieces are made of two pieces of card which have been stuck together, allowing the bottom edges to be folded outwards creating a stand base for them to be placed around the 3D play mat or wriggled along the tracks during adventures.

Whilst the 3D playmat promotes free play and allows the child to let their imagination flow there are some helpful prompts along the track as to what Thomas and his friends might be up to.

Boo Roo and Tigger Too’s thoughts…

As Tigger and I opened up the Thomas & Friends: Thomas’ Big Pop-Up Journey book for the first time it was lovely to see how much thought and attention had gone into the book.  From the large envelope inside the front cover to store all the engines.  To the thick fold out pages of the pop-up journey that unfolds a new attraction on the Island of Sodor with each turn.

Whilst Tigger was initially disappointed not to find Clarabel included within the accessories alongside Annie and Thomas, he soon decided that it was a good thing as he only has two hands and wouldn’t be able to move all three at once (I love his logic).
