Dulce de leche also known as milk jam, is a Latin American dessert prepared by heating sugar and milk for several hours. When finished, the dessert takes on a jam-like texture. It is delicious, easy to make, and complements other desserts very well. It is often paired with clotted cream on pies and wafers. It’s also used as a dip for fruits, like strawberries.

In this article, we are going to present to you the instructions and ingredients for dulce de leche, so that you can make it at home.

What Ingredients Do I Need?

Dulce de leche isn’t a dish that requires many ingredients. In fact, you can make this recipe with a single ingredient: Condensed milk. Condensed milk is simple cow’s milk, with the water removed. Usually, it is sweetened. It has a very delicious flavour on its own and is often used in baking cakes and making sweet drinks, like lassi. In terms of cooking equipment, you’ll need a pot, a baking tray, or an instant pot depending on the method that you choose to use.

Make Your Own Dulce De Leche At Home In These Easy Steps

Method 1: Boiling

The most popular way of preparing dulce de leche is through boiling. To boil, simply remove the labels from your can of condensed milk and add it to a pot. Fill the pot with water until the can’s covered by a few inches of water. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce it to simmer. You’ll need to boil the can for at least two hours, ideally three. As the can boils, it will act as a pressure cooker, keeping the temperature consistent. You need to make sure that the can’s always submerged, so add more water if water evaporates.

Method 2: Instant Pot

Making your dulce de leche in an instant pot is probably the easiest way to do it because it’s very hands-off. In this homemade dulce de leche recipe, simply drop your can of condensed milk into the instant pot, submerged in water. Choose the pressure cook option on high pressure and cook it for at least 90 minutes. If your dulce de leche comes out lumpy, then you can use an immersion blender to sort it out. The best thing about an instant pot is that you can make several tins of dulce de leche at once.

Method 3: Baking

Baking is another good method. Empty your tin into a pie dish, then cover it with foil. Place the dish into a roasting pan, which is filled with hot water. Place the pan into an oven and bake at 218C for an hour to an hour and a half. Don’t tamper with the foil for at least the first hour. After an hour, you can raise the foil and check the colour. Add more water to the pot if necessary. When you make dulce de leche in the oven, it’s ready to be used immediately. For maximum flavour, you should allow it to cool down to room temperature. You might also want to whisk it to remove any lumps.

Dulce de leche is a delicious dessert, that complements many dishes very well. If you’re a fan of all things sugary, then dulce de leche is something that you need to make. Make sure to eat it in moderation, because it’s high in sugar.
