More and more people these days are giving up alcohol, for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, we’re seeing people give up for health reasons, shunning the substance for a healthier lifestyle.

Then of course there’s the large number of people who have struggled with alcohol addiction and ended up in rehab. Going through rehab can be a challenging time and can be a significant investment in your life both mentally and financiall, although these days alcohol rehab cost can be tailored to suit the individual. So, when you come out and you’re feeling like you’re back on track you often want to celebrate.

Booking a holiday is often one of those celebratory treats, but they can be difficult to navigate in recovery at the best of times, never mind when you are finding your feet alcohol free.

Most counsellors would say find structure and stability in your home life before heading anywhere new, and that is right. But if you are at that place, it could well be time to start booking flights and enjoy a new adventure. There are things to think about though when booking your first trip to help you navigate it sober, including:

Five Tips For Picking A Destination For An Alcohol Free Holiday

Alcohol Free Activities and Attractions

Of course, when looking at locations one of the things you need to look out for are the places that have lots of alcohol free attractions. Seek out destinations that have areas of natural beauty, plenty of museums and even activities like health spas and retreats that can even enhance your recovery.

You’ll want to pack your days with things to do that avoid alcohol and you can determine how easy that is in the planning phase.

Availability of Support and Resources

What you may find useful is the support that’s available elsewhere. Of course, language barriers may be an issue in some cases but destinations across the world have strong support networks and recovery communities.

It may be that you can even reach out to them and get guidance on sober-friendly things to do or even meet up with people and make friends along the way.

Accommodation Options

Think about the type of accomodation you want to stay in. Seeking out hotels or resorts that offer amenities that can bolster mental health is a good option, with the likes of spas, outdoor gardens, pools and meditation spaces all providing a place of solace for when you need it.

You may also want to consider places that are more peaceful than a busy city centre hotel on a Saturday evening, which may not be conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Cultural Sensitivity and Acceptance

Exploring the culture and attitudes towards alcohol is one of the most important things you can do. Look at statistics around drinking, while you can also get a good idea from their reputations too. For example, Ibiza during summer season is probably not the best option, while the pub culture of Ireland or Germany may also be difficult to avoid.

It may be that you opt for countries where alcohol is less of a focus, such as those where it’s frowned upon for religious reasons. This will limit the amount of time you’re face to face with the substance, and there will be certainly no pressures around to drink.

Accessibility and Safety

Finally, you want to make the trip as easy as possible to reduce any stressors. This means choosing destinations that are easily accessible, offer reliable transport options and you’re familiar with local laws and customs and won’t struggle with any language barriers.

This can create as smooth a holiday as possible and one that you’ll remember forever, for all the right reasons!
