6 Ways you can prioritise self care

We all know that self care is so important. After all, how can you give from an empty cup? But the truth is, we don’t prioritise self care enough.

Life can be hectic at times. It is one of those things that we can just go with the flow with, especially as parents. There are often so many plates spinning. From school pick-ups and drop-offs, sport commitments in the evenings, and playdates. Not forgetting that many of us have full-time jobs, or young children at home to contend with. It can often feel overwhelming at times.

We all know that self care is so important. After all, how can you give from an empty cup? But the truth is, we don’t prioritise self care enough. With so much filling our minds and likely an endless “to-do” list where do we even start factoring in time for ourselves. In some cases, doing so can also make you feel guilty. It has to stop!

As parents and caregivers, we can’t give our very best if we are not feeling the best we can be. Self care enables us to have that time to stop, relax, gather our thoughts and feel good about ourselves. No matter how busy your day is, you will find time to fit in some self care. I wanted to share with you some of the things that you could try.

Easy ways you can prioritise self care

A longer than usual shower

Showers are a necessity in order to keep us clean but don’t feel like you have to rush your shower. The hot water on our skin can be very relaxing, and let’s face it, time in the shower often means that you can’t be asked questions or moaned at. Take time to exfoliate your skin by using an exfoliating soap sponge, put a hair mask in your hair or leave the conditioner in for a little longer.

Another great thing you can do with the shower is to switch it to cold at the end. It may sound crazy, but a cold shower is strangely liberating. It gets the blood flowing and has been a proven technique to help with mental health. Try it and see for yourself.

A bath

There is nothing quite like a long soak in the bath, and again, time in the bathroom usually means time on your own so it is the ideal opportunity to just rest for a moment. Indulge yourself with some bath bombs or your favourite essential oils, grab a drink and some reading material, and let the water place an element of calmness over you. A bath is one of the most relaxing things you can do and gives you a chance to embrace self care such as your skincare routine, de-fuzzing your legs, or adding a face mask while you relax.

Thirty minutes in your day just for you

Let’s be honest with ourselves, we can all find thirty minutes in our day just to stop and take stock of our mindset. Figure out when you can do it and enjoy some time just for you. Pick one of your favourite wax melts and let the scent take over, grab a cup of tea or a favourite beverage, and then just sit and relax. You could watch a bit of TV, read your book or just focus on your senses. What you can smell, see, taste and hear. It is very soothing.

Implement a skincare routine

A great way to take a few minutes for yourself and look after you at the same time is to implement a skincare routine. Cleansing and moisturising your skin will not only benefit you in your appearance, but it is a therapeutic routine to go through each morning and at night. It also gives you that time to focus on your actions rather than everything else that is going on.

Take some exercise or go for a walk

We all know that exercise is good for us, and yet we likely have that very low on the priority list of things we need to do. It is a form of self care, and it can work wonders for your energy levels and your mindset. You could head to an exercise class in the evening, go for a run in the morning, or simply head out for a walk. While you are exercising you could listen to a podcast or some of your favourite music.

Read or listen to an audiobook

Finally, reading is one of the things we likely don’t make time for, but there are always going to be books we enjoy. So take some time out to read a book. Even if it is just for ten minutes, it will allow your mind to escape reality and focus on something different. If reading isn’t for you, then why not try an audiobook instead?

Hopefully, these suggestions will help you to make prioritise self care. Even if it is just for ten minutes you will notice the difference.
