Family Summer – How to Have Fun and Spend Less

July 12, 2013
I love the summer – when the sun finally does come out, it’s the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with the family. I’m not quite so fond of the expense that tends to come with it, though; after all, taking the kids to theme parks, paying for a holiday and going to big events can all take a sizeable chunk out of your budget. But, there are some simple ways to save some money.

One of the easiest is to check what’s on offer through your employees union (provided you’re a member of one, of course!). Often, you can receive all kinds of discounts on expenses like the above – though of course this does vary from one organisation to the next. By way of example, I’ll be looking at some of the most useful discounts for summer that Prospect members can get.

Money off theme park entry

In my opinion, getting a discount on theme park tickets is one of the best summer savings you can make – especially if you have daredevil kids! What’s great about theme parks is that they have attractions for all ages, which means they’re likely to suit all the family, and since most people don’t go to them often, they really do feel like a special treat.

Among the theme parks you could enjoy money off at is Thorpe Park. This is home to some seriously exciting rides, including The Swarm, Saw and Nemesis Inferno. Probably best for families with slightly older children, Thorpe Park is full of fast-paced rollercoasters. Alton Towers, meanwhile, is another place you could get cheap tickets too and has plenty for younger as well as older kids.

Discounts on national events

Heading to national events is another great way to enjoy the summer together, as well as being another area in which you can save money. There is a huge range of options to choose from, but one of the best for the whole family is the Silverstone Classic, which takes place on July 26th to 28th this year.

Held in Northamptonshire, this event is the biggest classic motor racing festival in the entire world. Race-loving parents will be able to enjoy seeing classic cars battle it out for first place, while there is also live music, air displays and family entertainment that will make sure visitors of all ages are kept happy throughout the day.

Accommodation

Whether you’re planning a long break, a short getaway or simply an overnight stay while you’re visiting an attraction or attending an event, accommodation is a key cost of any trip. So, if you can save any money on it, you should find your wallet will be very happy!

Through your union, you could save on a massive range of accommodation. Camping fans, for instance, could get money off a few days in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, while anyone wanting to stay in a slick hotel for less can get a discount on a trip to Ghyll Manor.

Self-catering holiday cottages in the Cotswolds are another excellent option for money-conscious families. The beauty of a holiday cottage is that is also allows you to create a real home away from home, and it will, of course, give everyone that little bit more space to relax than a traditional hotel.
