A drawing of a person

An audience with Sophy Henn

March 10, 2015

A few weeks ago whilst we were visiting our local Waterstones store I spotted a sign in the window regarding a visit to the store from Sophy Henn. The World Book Day illustrator Sophy Henn and author of Where Bear? and Pom Pom get the grumps would be in store doing readings, activities and signings.

We headed over to the children’s counter to sign up Roo and Tigger to take part and I added it to our family calendar. Fast forward a couple of weeks and the day finally arrived for us to head into Norwich for the event.

Reading

There is something quite special about listening to a story read by the author who created that special book. Listening to them as they take us on the journey through the book, meeting the different characters and listening to the story unfold.

Sophy Henn kindly read both Where Bear? and Pom Pom gets the grumps, both of which the children enjoyed. Tigger particularly loved Pom Pom gets the grumps, especially when Pom Pom says ‘HARRUMPH!

Activities

After Sophy had read her stories she invited us to try out some crafts and activities. First up was learning how to draw Where Bear? facial expressions. She gave the children tips on things that will always be the same when drawing faces like the nose, how to add different eyes and mouths depending on whether bear is happy, sad or angry.

In order to join in with the Pom Pom gets the grumps story the children were shown how to make Pom Pom puppets so that they could HARRUMPH! along with Pom Pom. They were really simple to make and I can see us making a whole host of them at home.

Signing

After the event Sophy was available for children to get their books signed. She was so very kind in signing a copy of Where Bear? for Roo and Pom Pom gets the grumps for Tigger (who is now obsessed with saying Harrumph!).

She signed each of the books with a special dedication and added some illustrations, I can see these books being treasured by the children for years to come.

We had a wonderful time meeting Sophy Henn, she was truly lovely.
