Make a day of it at London Southbank family attractions

April 6, 2019

As the capital of the UK, it’s really no surprise that London is so very large. It’s a bit of a no-brainer, really; it goes without saying. That said, when we plan a family weekend away to the Big Smoke, we often try to do all of the main areas, overlooking the size of the city and how many sights it has to offer.

With such an abundance of amazing attractions, is there any wonder that when your London ‘break’ comes to an end, you’re often left feeling absolutely exhausted?

Rather than running yourself ragged on your next trip to London, plan your itinerary a little differently. Maybe extend your stay if you want to do it all, or narrow down your to-do list, concentrating on particularly child-friendly areas within the Capital. London Southbank is a great place to start.

Without further ado, here’s how to make a day of it – or even a full weekend, if you like – at London’s bustling Southbank.

Family attractions on London’s Southbank

Coca-Cola London Eye

One of London’s most famous contemporary landmarks, the Coca-Cola London Eye is a 135m observation wheel, which offers unparalleled panoramic views across the capital.

An absolute must-do attraction for families, the London Eye is an award-winning tourist stop, with over 85 awards under its belt. As well as taking a ride on the city’s most popular visitor attraction, your ticket price also includes a free family pass to the London Eye 4D Cinema Experience.

Shrek’s Adventure!

Are you and your youngster ready to take a trip to the Land of Far Far Away? Everyone’s favourite Dreamworks animated series has been brought to life in this sensational Southbank adventure. The newest of the London Southbank attractions, located just by the Coca-Cola London Eye, Shrek’s Adventure! sees much-loved characters, including Donkey, Puss in Boots, and, of course, Shrek and Fiona, take a trip to the UK’s capital.

But, as you may expect from the barmy bunch, all doesn’t quite go to plan. Featuring ten family-orientated comedy shows, stunning film sets, and a jaw-dropping 4D ride, Shrek’s Adventure! is an attraction the whole family will adore.

SEA LIFE London

Get ready to explore London’s world-class SEA LIFE London Aquarium. Boasting one of the largest collections of global marine life, not only in the UK but in Europe, this is an aquatic centre experience like you’ve never seen.

In addition to the 500 species of marine life, including sharks to Gentoo Penguins, SEA LIFE London also offers families the chance to go on a Rainforest Adventure at the very heart of London City. After you’ve seen all there is to see in the deeps, immerse yourself in a world of crawling creatures and crocodiles as you trek through the Amazon rainforest with Ranger Andy.

The London Dungeon

The London Dungeon is something alright – it’s an experience your family will never forget. Sitting along Southbank for almost 40 years, this attraction is one for die-hard fans of local history. Taking you and your youngster back through 1000 years of London’s most gruesome, horrible history. From Mrs Lovett’s Pie Shop and Sweeney Todd to Guy Fawkes’ Gunpowder Plot and a worryingly realistic Torture Chamber, the Dungeons is a thrilling walk-through attraction that promises to shock all your senses.

Expect your heart to race with laughter, disbelief, and horror, as you view over 350 horrid sets, up to 19 ghastly live shows, and two perilously themed rides.

City Cruises

It’s a fast-paced city life in London, particularly for tourists. No matter whether you’ve done all the Southbank stuff in a day or you’ve spread it out a little longer, Southbank’s City Cruises are always a welcome addition to your family plans. Rather than trudging around the rest of the capital, why not sit back, relax, and see the sites on one of the City Cruises fleet of sightseeing boats.

Children will love being on board, as you sail along between Westminster, the London Eye, and Greenwich. Available 365 days of the year, whenever you choose to travel to London, a tour on the Thames will be a highlight of your trip.

Alongside the family attractions, take the time to see the street entertainers too!
