Escape your winter blues

January 8, 2013

With all the harsh and mildly depressing winter weather, who doesn’t want to get away this spring and relax in a sunny destination? The beaches of the Myknoos, the Canary Islands, the French Riviera, or even the Caribbean – all sound amazing.

The only thing standing between you and your holiday is you. Don’t let money get in the way either. There are plenty of budget-friendly destinations that provide plenty of sun and fun for the entire family. If budget is a concern, you can always selling DVDs, electronics, books, clothes and other unwanted items for a little extra cash. Hurry up and book your trip now, before you end up changing your mind!

Canary Islands

The best thing about the canaries is that they are close to the United Kingdom, relatively cheap, and there is sun year round. The turquoise waters, breathtaking views and family friendly activities make it an ideal spot for a family vacation. There are four islands to choose from and plenty of sprawling beaches. In Lanzarote, take the kids to Timanfaya National Park to tour the centuries-old volcanoes and black sand beaches. Gran Isla has numerous water activities and sand dunes for the more adventurous. Fuerteventura and Tenerife are a little more quiet and relaxed. The largest island, Tenerife, has a zoo and other attractions more suited for kids.

Morocco

Also close the UK, are the northern cities of Morocco. The Agadir and Essaouira resorts are great for lounging on the beach and indulging in luxury resorts. While there are extended hours of sunlight and gorgeous emerald green waters, there is more to see and do in this North African country than just hang out on the beach. Explore some of the more urban areas like Marrakesh and Rabat to experience the traditional souk markets and Moroccan cuisine.

Dominican Republic

Named one of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014, this Caribbean island is a hot destination that lives up to its vibrant culture, warm waters, flavorful food and welcoming people. From small colonial style neighborhoods and Saharan style deserts to majestic mountains and white sand beaches, the island is one of the most geographically diverse countries. That also means that there is a variety of activities that suit all ages and interests. Popular ones include water sports like snorkeling, whale watching and riding the sand dunes on ATVs.

Turkey

This is another country full of rich history and diverse people and geography. It was also nominated on Lonely Planet’s list. A visit to Turkey, is like taking a walk through history. Tours of century-old palaces and countryside ruins reveal the homes and stomping grounds of Ottoman sultans. When you’re not on the beach soaking up the sun or eating a scrumptious kebap, take a cruise on the Bosphorus or get a relaxing massage in a traditional Ottoman hamam.
