Your Water Can Affect Your Health // Is Your Filtration Sufficient?

February 23, 2018

Depending on where you live, the water coming to your tap might contain tiny particles, some not even visible to the eye. If these particles reach your digestive system, they can cause health issues.

One of the fastest and easiest ways to clean drinking water is through filtration. Buy a water filter and install it on your tap such that all water coming out is filtered and all dirt and other particles removed.

Among other things, filtration benefits include;

  • Reduces the risk of diseases: When chemicals sneak into drinking water, they can cause all kinds of diseases. Ammonia, for instance, increases the risk of cancer. Filtering your drinking water is, therefore, a good way to reduce your risk of cancer.
  • Assists with detoxification: The liver and kidney play a critical role in removing toxins from our bodies. But, these organs become tired, which is what sometimes leads to kidney and liver failure. Drinking filtered water helps reduce the number of toxins in our bodies, reducing the burden placed on the two organs.
  • Can save you money: If you’re not filtering your drinking water, then it’s plausible that you buy the water from stores. This can be very costly especially if you have a large family. By having a water filter installed on your taps, you can avoid all the costs.

Choosing the best filter for your home

So, assuming that you’re reached the logical conclusion of purchasing filters for your taps, which filter should you buy? What qualities should you focus on? There are two factors to keep in mind; the filtration technology and design features.

With regards to filtration technology, there are three options to choose from;

  • Activated carbon filtration: Also the most widely used filtration approach, here, contaminants chemically bond to the carbon as water flows through the filter.
  • Ion exchange filtration: This filtration system works by passing water over a resin that replaces bad ions with good ones. The technology also helps to soften water.
  • Reverse osmosis filtration: Finally, reverse osmosis filtration systems are your best option, budget allowing. These systems force water through a semi-permeable membrane, blocking all particles larger than water molecules. This means that all toxins will be trapped, even those that may have been missed by a carbon filter component.

Regarding design, there are a couple of options to choose from. If you’re looking to buy from the most cost-effective personal water purification systems such as the Berkey Filters, the following are some of the standout styles to watch out for;

  • Faucet mount systems: These mostly use carbon filters and must be replaced every three months. But they are also inexpensive and easy to install.
  • Pitchers: Pitchers employ a carbon filtration technology known as granulated carbon filters. They are mostly portable and thus don’t need to be installed. The only downside is that they are rather slow.
  • Countertop filters: These use a different and more efficient carbon filtration technology known as carbon block filtration. Usually, they also use a secondary technique such as ion exchange. They are excellent for installation under the sink but can be a bit expensive.

If you can install any of these filters in your home, you won’t have to live in fear of waterborne infections again.
