We need to evacuate!

December 18, 2013

Just under two weeks ago the Boo Roo and Tigger Too household found ourselves evacuated from our home. After arriving back after a hectic day at the Panasonic HQ I found I had several missed calls and texts from both work and home. A storm surge was heading our way on top of a high tide and gale force winds, and as we live in between the sea and the river we were advised to take what we could upstairs and evacuate by 9.30pm.

With the children already tucked up in their beds Mr Boo and I started to move our valuables upstairs and out of harms way. I shared what was happening with some friends on Facebook, who obviously were concerned for us and those families up and down the east coast who were in the possible affected area. One of my wise friends asked if I had gathered my home insurance details and advised me to keep them close to hand in case I needed them. With that I put down the box of trains I was carrying and went in search for my Direct Line home insurance documents, having found them I placed them in our ‘rescue’ bag.

With the valuables and those items that have sentimental value placed upstairs it came time to wake the children, load up the car and head off to Magic Nanny’s house to wait to see what damage the storm surge brought. Thankfully Great Yarmouth managed to escape relatively unharmed including our home so we were able to return home at midnight.

When we pulled up at home that one of our neighbours who decided not to evacuate came out to greet us, he advised that he had been keeping an eye on the houses on our row in case of burglars. At no pint during this whole evening had I thought about people breaking into the evacuated homes and stealing their possessions. It makes me sad to think those in rescue centre would have been glad they were not flooded only to come home and find that they had been burgled… I only hope they too had home insurance.
