Top Tips for Children’s Oral Hygiene

July 26, 2016

When it comes to oral hygiene the earlier you get your children into a good routine the easier it becomes. Whilst you will always get the days when they turn round and say that they don’t want to brush their teeth, hopefully, a positive routine will soon jolly them along.

Toothpaste – Start brushing your children’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first milk tooth breaks through (usually at around six months, but it can be earlier or later). It’s important to use a fluoride paste, as this helps to prevent and control tooth decay.

Toothbrushing – Brush your child’s teeth for about two minutes twice a day: once just before bedtime and at least one other time during the day. Encourage them to spit out excess toothpaste, but not to rinse with lots of water. Rinsing with water after tooth brushing will wash away the fluoride and make it less effective.

Effective brushing – Make tooth brushing as fun as possible by using an egg timer or Aquafresh brush time app to time brushing for two minutes. This will make the time appear to go quicker and hopefully inject some fun into the routine.

Visit the dentist – Ensure to take your child for regular dental check-ups as advised by the dentist. Make this a fun experience by taking their favourite teddy to have its teeth checked too. This will help reinforce that visiting the dentist is a positive thing.

Orthodontics – There may come a time when orthodontics are required, the Centre for Advanced Dentistry Yorkshire has a wealth of experience in this field and have a great information section their site to help guide your child through the experience.
