Top five things to do for free to keep the kids entertained over the half term holidays

May 24, 2014

Family holidays and days out are becoming so expensive for stable savers that have to delve into their precious savings to pay for them.

  • With price premiums applied to air fares and accommodation during half terms and summer holidays a new study shows almost a quarter of parents have had to use savings to go on holiday
  • The Prime Minister recently waded into the issue saying schools should stagger their term dates to stop travel companies increasing prices during holidays
  • But even days out closer to home can be hugely expensive, with parents saying they can spend nearly £250 for just one family outing
  • Spurred by friendly rivalry, parents are twice as likely to break into savings to keep up with spending of friends and family

To help parents from breaking the piggy bank, Jasmine Birtles, GE Capital Direct ambassador, reveals her top five things to do for free to keep the kids entertained over the half term holidays:

  1. “Get creative” – Old newspapers, empty yogurt pots, egg cartons, cans and bottle tops, or bits of felt and card, and half used pots of acrylic paint… Look around the home and you’ll often be surprised with the number of things lying about that can mean a fun afternoon of arts and craft with the kids. There is also a wealth of materials on the internet including pictures you can print out and colour and loads of ideas for things to make and do. It’s all about letting your children’s imagination run wild with what they can do with an empty washing up liquid or squash bottle.
  2. Be a culture vulture – Whether your kids are into art, science, football or trains, the UK offers a huge range of free museums, many with interactive exhibits. Aside from the obvious choices like the Natural History museum and Science museum in London, parents can think about exploring Maiden Castle in Dorset, World Museum in Liverpool or National Football museum in Manchester, all of which have free entrance for adults and children.
  3. Experience the great outdoors – With the sun shining and days longer, there’s no reason for the children to be cooped up at home. Take your kids out for long walks or bike rides and have a picnic in the countryside.
  4. Host potluck kids parties – It’s likely that other parents, too, are scratching their heads thinking of things to do with their kids during the holidays. Why not get your child’s best friends together and host a potluck kids party in the garden – getting each of them to bring some snacks and a game each/
  5. Find a free local event – Sign yourself up websites such as Free-events.co.uk and Wherecanwego.com for listings of free events. You can also scour the local paper for other family-friendly activities that’s right on your doorstep and save on travel costs. Don’t forget your local library too and check the website of your local Council as they often have special events for families in the holidays.”

Jasmine continues: “Parents needn’t break into the piggy bank during the half term holidays for pricey entrance tickets to theme parks or attractions. Going on a bike ride or bringing out the paint sets at home are just some of the fun and affordable family activities parents can do with their kids to keep them out of mischief during the holidays.
