The one where I threw a hissy fit at work

June 4, 2013

Yesterday I threw a hissy fit at work…

Not something that a 30 year old women should be proud of but sometimes your hand is forced into these situations

Here’s what happened…

My first day back at work following my holiday to Butlins and I was happily exchanging stories and tales of what we got up to. Then time to put my work head back on and I’m informed by the deputy manager that they might have found someone to cover the two days I don’t work (my job share leaves this week). She then went on to explain that it wasn’t her idea, I knew immediately that she was referring to Pam.

Faster than lightning I replied ‘I am not working with her!’

(Now I realise that I wouldn’t technically be working with her but I will be the one left with all the jobs she didn’t want to do on her days)

I think at first both the deputy manager and another staff member thought I was joking, but trust me in no way was I joking. I attempted to speak to my line manager (we also have history, I fondly refer to her as Worzel Gummidge as you never know what head she has on) but she wasn’t available.

After sitting stewing on the prospect of her coming back I found myself getting more and more annoyed by the whole thing. Worzel Gummidge then came to see me and I asked if Pam was coming back, she said yes, so I replied ‘I request a department transfer!‘. She then spoke to me in her usual condescending tone, like I’m a child ‘come on now, don’t be silly you won’t even be working with her’.

Red rag to a bull…

‘Look I am asking you as my line manager for a department transfer, if she is coming back I am not working with her. Either transfer me to another department or I’ll find myself I new position elsewhere!’ I replied back.

The outcome? despite reassuring me that there was someone else who could work those days instead Pam is coming. So now I am faced with the prospect of an unhappy workplace…

Do I stay or do I go?
