Recess is supposed to be a fun break from the classroom, a chance to laugh and play, but a schoolyard can be a lonely place for a child on the sidelines – introducing The Buddy Bench.

Whenever we think of playtime we automatically assume it is all fun and games, however, it’s not always like that. For some, they can feel left out, unconfident and overwhelmed in the playground. But if you are busy having fun, how do you know if someone isn’t having as much fun as you? The Buddy Bench book offers an insight into the thoughts and feelings of those left out of the fun and how things can be made better for them.

When it’s time for recess, Miss Mellon’s students pour through the school doors and swarm over the playground. They fly make-believe planes, tame dragons, and ride elephants. But wait – why are there a few kids standing alone and watching? Why aren’t they joining in? Why do they look so forlorn?

They all have their reasons, but all they really need is a little encouragement. They need a kind word. They need a buddy bench.

What is a buddy bench?

Buddy benches – also known as friendship benches, are appearing in schoolyards around the world. When a child sits on the bench, it’s a signal to the other kids to ask him or her to play.

Our thoughts of The Buddy Bench

This is a delightful book to highlight how some children can feel left out, unconfident to ask to join in and overwhelmed by other children. With buddy/friendship benches in most playgrounds at school and even in some local parks. It is a lovely way to explain the need for these benches and how children can help those who sit upon them. I loved the idea that the children were encouraged to get involved with the making of the buddy bench for their school.
