A baby lying on a bed

As I fell pregnant with Roo I was suddenly offered a world of advice from friends, family, and colleagues. Each had their own opinion on how to ensure I had a good pregnancy, birth and of course, a wealth of comments on how I should and should not bring up my baby. I’ll be honest and say I was somewhat overwhelmed by it all.

How would I know if I was doing the right thing?
How would I know what my baby needs?
How would I know how to do the best for them?

After carrying Roo for nine months I suddenly had this baby in my arms and all my worries of being a good parent, making sure I was doing things correctly and ensuring that she had everything she needed, flooded back to me.

As I sat looking at my new baby whilst completing a night feed, the house around us was silent, Mr. Boo was sound asleep next to us and for that moment in time it was just the two of us. Mother and daughter entwined together as she fed and I sat in awe of this beautiful baby that I’d helped create, grow and give birth to. It suddenly dawned on me that for all the worrying, for all the ‘helpful’ advice and for all the baby books I’d read, in fact, all she needed was me.

The power of touch, the power of a cuddle, the power of skin to skin would mean far more to her than anything else. Whether she was tired, if she was upset, if she had the sniffles, being next to me would bring her more comfort than anything else. As she settled to sleep in her Moses basket, how wanting to be away from each other we would drift off holding each others hand, just so she knew that I was there.

Pure love

WaterWipes have produced a beautiful film called ‘Pure Love‘ an experiment to show the natural power a new mum has to care for her baby. Using infrared filming techniques and equipment to monitor heart rate, breathing and blood oxygen levels, it captures for the first time the biological response to skin to skin contact. The film makes visible the innate ‘superpower’ that every mum has to stabilize her baby’s biology when held in the skin to skin position. The experiment was conducted in collaboration with three first time new mums by world-renowned skin to skin expert Dr. Susan Ludington. It is simple, emphatic proof that you (Mums) are all your baby needs.

A world-renowned expert on skin to skin Dr. Susan Ludington comments that, scientifically, your skin on baby’s skin is a potent combination and can do something absolutely amazing for your baby. She explains that mums’ bodies are extraordinary. They spend nine months making and giving birth to a baby. And, once the baby is a born, a mother’s body continues to do incredible things for her baby – she even has the power to regulate baby’s biology simply by holding her baby skin to skin.

At the end of the day, all your baby needs is you and that is pretty special
