Jo Middleton the award-winning blogger behind Slummy Single Mummy has written her first novel Playgroups & Prosecco and I’m so pleased that I was sent an advanced copy. This has been tucked in my handbag, on the arm of the sofa and by my laptop so that I can read a few pages whenever I get a minute.

This year I have found myself returning to my previous love of picking up a book and getting lost in the words and characters. Throughout my teenage years, I always had a book in my bag to enjoy just in case I got five minutes to read a chapter or two.

Single mum Frankie’s whole life revolves around her kids. But when your teenage daughter goes on more dates than you and your toddler has a more active social life, something has to change. Forget ‘me-time’, Frankie would settle for some adult conversation, and watching something other than the Disney Channel.

The local playgroup may be ruled by Instagram mums with perfect husbands but Frankie accidentally forms a splinter group of single parents. After all, Mummy really needs a playdate of her own.

Now pass the prosecco…

My thoughts on Playgroups & Prosecco…

As soon as I opened up the book to find that it was written in a diary style, I was taken back to my days of reading Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones’s Diary. However, just a few pages in it is clear that this is so much more than just another diary-style novel. Frankie draws you into what life is like as a mother and juggling her newly-found single status. While navigating ‘baby-daddies’, work and Tinder. Whilst sharing her love for Jaffa cakes, prosecco and Netflix.

Reading about the friends she made whilst taking her youngest daughter to playgroup, makes me question why I never plucked up the courage to attend myself with my own children. Her description of the people she encounters makes me laugh out loud as she is spot on with the ‘Instagram mums’.

Her newly found friendships help her take the leap into the dating scene again via Tinder – which makes me realise just how lucky I am not to be ‘out there’ dating. The messages she receives from potential suiters are… WOW! The leg-popping kiss man seemed like he had potential, only to ruin it with a message the following morning. Whilst at least he was honest, it was still very eye-opening.

Overall a funny, laugh-out-loud read about what life is truly like a single mum navigating her way through a new chapter in her life. Although my lingering question is, how can she only consume half a packet of Jaffa cakes? Please tell me I’m not the only one to find that the packet mysteriously disappears before my eyes.
