It’s almost two years since we undertook our bathroom renovation in our old house. Since we finished that project we have received several messages about how we undertook the project.
When I think back to our bathroom renovation I am still to this day ashamed of how it looked before we started it. It’s one of those things that you live with and only once you have finished transforming a room that you realise just how awful it was.
Planning a bathroom renovation can be as expensive or as cheap as you want to make it, however, buying quality products that you have researched will serve you well in the long run so might be worth spending that little bit extra now.
Bathroom Suite
Bathroom suites come in a variety of styles, shapes and colours. Personally, I would say that white is the only way to go. It can be accessorised with any colour tiles, walls and towels to add that pop of colour without the suite feeling dated and old.
You can pick bathroom suites relatively cheap in most DIY centres and online retailers. Make sure that you check the sizing before you order and whether you will need to move any of the existing plumbing as this will add to your costs.
Most bathroom suites will come with taps and waste disposal included, however, don’t feel that you need to stay with this standard finish. ABL have cheap tapware and will transform the suite and make it feel much more expensive that it was.
Tiles
One of the key things for us when we renovated our bathroom was the look and feel of it. We wanted that hotel suite feel to the room rather than just a generic bathroom. Having stayed in some lovely hotels over the years, Mr Boo and I were keen to utilise some of the ideas we had come across.
If you have a small bathroom, there is nothing you can physically do to make it look bigger so an optical illusion is important. We created this using large tiles laid in a brick style to make the room appear bigger. Combined with large floor tiles to make the floor look less fussy whilst retaining the practicality of tiles within a family bathroom.
Accessories
Like anything in life, accessories can make or break it. These don’t have to break the bank but can really transform a room and add that finishing touch. Attempting to keep a family bathroom organised a large bathroom cabinet helps store away lotions and potions as well as any medicines out of the reach of little hands. A wall mounted towel rail instead of a floor cabinet frees up floor space and provides that extra feeling of space.

Matching towels also provide that finishing look, difficult when you have children who request their favourite cartoon character towel after the bath (so these might need to be hidden underneath).
