A Mum’s Guide To Attending A Wedding With Children In Tow

December 30, 2016

It’s no secret that once you become a mother your life changes in many ways, one of which is that a lot more planning is required, especially when it comes to attending events. If you and your family have been invited to a wedding, you are most probably starting to stress about how it will go. The chances are that you are worrying about everything, from how you kids will get through the church service to what will happen if they don’t like the food.

However, there’s no need to stress out as there are plenty of ways that you can make attending a wedding with the kids in tow easier. Don’t worry too much about how your little ones will behave because they wouldn’t have been invited if the happy couple didn’t want them there. So don’t stress, instead prepare properly, and you can ensure that you have an incredible time.

Talk to your little ones about what a wedding is like

If your little ones have never been to a wedding before, it’s a good idea to tell them what weddings are like, so that they know what to expect. Perhaps you could show them a video of a wedding or find a book that talks about attending a wedding. Explain that they will need to sit still for a while in the church, sing hymns and say prayers and that afterward there will be food, dancing, and lots of fun.

Pack toys and games

For in the church and for at the reception, pack a selection of mini toys and games. These can be things like pencils and paper, puzzles, games, etc. – anything small and that doesn’t make a noise is ideal. For at the reception, packing a tablet loaded with games and movies could be a good idea, as it will mean that should your little ones get bored, you can stick them in a corner to relax while playing games or watching a movie.

Let your kids help pick the gift

A great way to get your kids to feel more involved in the wedding planning process and to help get them excited about attending it is to allow them to help you pick the gift. Take a look online at wedding gifts and find a site that you like, then add a couple of gifts that you like to your basket and ask your little ones to help you pick the perfect one. Get creative when it comes to choosing a wedding gift – the more unique your gift is, the better.

Ensure that their clothes are comfortable

One of the worst things that you can do when it comes to attending a wedding is to dress your little ones in uncomfortable clothes. You see, unless you want them to have a tantrum, it’s important that they are dressed comfortably. Of course, it’s also important that they are dressed smartly, so you need to find an outfit that’s smart and fitting for a wedding, and that is also comfortable for them to wear all day long.

Pack food

Just in case your little ones don’t like the food that’s being served, it’s a good idea to pack some food for them. Fill a lunchbox with sandwiches, snacks, and drinks, so that there’s plenty for your little ones to eat, should they not enjoy the food that’s being served.

Believe it or not, going to a wedding with your little ones in tow doesn’t have to be a nightmare, it’s just a case of being prepared.
