Making a better snack choice

February 22, 2016

When I was growing up I was one of those children who could eat whatever they liked without ever gaining weight. I’d listen to my mum and her friends joke…

Little pickers, wear big knickers

… without ever giving it much thought.

As I’ve gotten older, that phrase rings in my ears every time I reach for a snack. Being a busy mum of three, I am usually looking for a quick fix when it comes to snacks. The biscuit tin, the children’s lunch box snacks (yes I am one of those parents who steals their children’s snacks and then has to replace them) and if I’m feeling good I’ll raid the fruit bowl – however, even the hassle of peeling an orange or gnawing through and apple seems to much effort.

Since having Piglet, I am very much aware of my size, weight and the importance of keeping my energy levels up. California Almonds recently asked me whether I’d like to try making a better snack choice by eating their roasted almonds for 21 days.

The health benefits of almonds have been well-established and are recommended as a non-dairy protein source as part of a healthy dietary pattern.2 Due to their high content of fibre, vitamin E, unsaturated fats and flavonoids, almonds offer potential for changing gut microbiota, which may, in turn, impact immunity, inflammation and general health.

The good news is that making positive changes to your family’s health doesn’t have to be challenging; a recent study has revealed that simply adding almonds or almond butter to the diet is a simple way to improve diet quality in adults and their young children.

Boo Roo and Tigger Too’s thoughts…

After making a conscious effort to have a packet of California Almonds in the snack tin, which I kept in Piglet’s changing bag or on the side by my laptop, I have felt much less guilt about reaching out for a snack. Each packet contains around 23 almonds which I found difficult to eating in one sitting whereas before I would happily eat my way through a larger snack, so a packet can last me all day and I just grab 3 or 4 almonds whenever I’m feeling peckish.

The great news is that almonds are a great way to use your healthy extra B allowance when following the Slimming World Extra Easy plan – with 16 almonds or 20g of flaked almonds allowance daily which is great when you consider I was snacking on these throughout the day.

Whilst my snacking habits have changed, consuming almonds has also made me feel less sluggish, energised and ‘regular’.
