Knitting – the multigenerational hobby

August 10, 2018

Not everyone knows how to knit. And honestly, it’s quite a shame. Knitting is one of those activities that should be shared from generation to generation. Think back to your childhood and the time that you’d spend with your grandmother or mother when they were knitting. Memories may come flooding back to you of them sitting and knitting for hours. Hopefully, they passed that love and knowledge on to you so that you can continue to share down your family tree as well.

For many, knitting is a time to bond. Time tends to slow down a bit, and the beauty of watching the hands create is mesmerizing and sparks many meaningful conversations. Those who love knitting know that with each and every movement, a memory of what they are creating is being made.

Not only does knitting create a generational bond that can be shared indefinitely throughout the family tree, but knitting also allows treasured gifts to be made to be given to those you love as well. Popular items to knit can be hats, scarves, blankets, potholders, baby shoes, and the list can go on and on. Anything that you can imagine, you can knit!

Creating family memories is great, but knitting also has great benefits for yourself as well. It’s often used as a stress reliever for those who just need a bit of time to unwind. Finding comfort in doing something that you love is what knitting is all about! Knitting is also relatively inexpensive compared to the other hobbies out there, and it’s been said that knitting is good for your motor skills and memory.

While not everyone understands knitting, that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be exposed to it! It’s important to keep it active and alive throughout your family history. Knitting has been around for hundreds of years, and it doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Take the opportunity to teach your family members how to knit. Finding a common hobby that everyone can truly treasure and take part in is a unique opportunity that is just waiting to be explored.

Start with a project that is simple and can be done quickly and easily, and then move on together to tackle others. There are so many amazing templates out there just waiting to be explored. And once you learn how to knit, it’s time to take that knowledge and pass it on to your daughters and granddaughters as well. Keeping knitting in the family is a true memory that will be treasured for many years to come.
