Whilst the warmer beaches from further afield have their appealing factors I am very much a home bird and love to explore the towns and cities that we have available within the UK. I’d love to get a large map of the UK and add different coloured pins into the places I have visited and the places I still need to go to – a visual travel bucket list of you will.
We are lucky enough to have friends all over the country, with many of them based in Berkshire so meeting up in Reading seems the logical choice. With so much to see and do I thought I share a few ways of making the most of a trip to Reading.

Getting around Reading
So why not leave the car at the hotel and enjoy Reading the sights, restaurants and shops. When your feet can’t take any more (or you’ve bought too much in the shops) the best way to get around is by getting a private hire taxi in reading.
There are many taxi companies to choose from so you won’t be waiting for long until you’re picked up wherever you are. One of the city’s oldest taxi firms Amex Cars also offer executive chauffeured VIP services with their fleet of prestige vehicles such as classy and comfy Mercedes and BMW where you can sit back and relax while your chauffeur can tour you around the city. The drivers are friendly and if asked they won’t hesitate in advising you to all the best bars, restaurants, and interesting places to visit in Reading and the surrounding Berkshire county.
Chilled out lunches
If you are looking for somewhere to chill out and catch up with friends whilst being surrounded by a beautiful Old Forge then The Shed Cafe is the place for you.
With scrumptious food served from their tiny kitchen, you chose to eat in or takeaway from their wonderful menu. If you’re having a party or a large get together why not ask them to prepare a buffet for you.
Step back in time
Hopefully, your visit will coincide with beautiful weather and walk around the historic Reading Abbey will be something that not only lets you enjoy the sun on your skin but you are able to step back in time and learn about the former Reading Prison which closed its doors in 2013.
Forbury Gardens is a public park in the town of Reading in the English county of Berkshire. The park is on the site of the outer court of Reading Abbey, which was in front of the Abbey Church. The site was formerly known as the Forbury, and one of the roads flanking the current gardens is still known as The Forbury. Fairs were held on the site three times a year until the 19th century.
Shop til you drop
It wouldn’t be a trip away without a spot of retail therapy. Thankfully Reading boasts The Oracle shopping centre with over 80 shops where you can shop until late and hang around for dinner without having to travel out too far. With a selection of shops, restaurants and cinema you could easily spend all day exploring everything The Oracle has to offer. Don’t forget you can use the local taxi services to get all that shopping back to your hotel.
Nearby interesting places to visit
The Museum of Berkshire Aviation is a small aviation museum in Woodley, a suburb of Reading in Berkshire, England. The museum is on the edge of the site of the former Woodley Aerodrome and many of its exhibits relate to the Phillips & Powis company, later renamed Miles Aircraft, which was based there from 1932 to 1947.
Every year Reading hosts the Reading Festival, which has been running since 1971. The festival takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend and is the largest of its kind in the UK aside from the Glastonbury Festival.
