Finishing Touches You Must Not Forget When Decorating

February 9, 2018

We all want our homes to look as good as possible. The problem is that cash is tight, so a lot of us end up doing the decorating ourselves. For the most part, people make a great job of it. However, it can be hard to achieve the polished look that the professionals do. This is largely because we forget the finishing touches.

Updating or re-finishing the skirting boards

There is a tendency for people not to bother to renew the skirting boards when they install a new floor. In some cases, this OK, they may be in a good enough state of repair for you to get away with simply re-painting them. However, sometimes they are just too dented or shoddy for you to be able to do this. Fortunately, firms like skirtingsrus.co.uk sell a wide-range of baseboards, that are inexpensive, easy to fit and good-quality. They also provide extensive advice about which type to buy and how to fit them. So, there really is no excuse not to finish your flooring off right.

Not repainting interior doors

Most of us are quite happy to paint a wall or window-sill, but we hate painting doors, especially panel doors. Now, this is understandable, because they are actually not very easy to paint. They are quite complex surfaces to paint. It is all too easy for the paint to run. As a result, many people simply leave their interior doors as they are when they redecorate. However, not painting your doors will definitely detract from the overall finish of a room.

I would, therefore, recommend that you take the time to learn the right way to paint a panel door. Once you know how you will always achieve good results and not have to pay someone else to do the job for you. You can learn how to repaint a panel door by watching this YT video.

Not updating large pieces of furniture

Large items of furniture like sideboards, sofas, and tables are expensive. So, understandably a lot of people do not update them when they redecorate. Sometimes this is not an issue because the existing furniture fits in fine with the latest style of home decor. However, at some point, there will be a clash between modern styling and older pieces of furniture. Now, do not worry, because there is a lot you can do to get around this issue without having to go out and buy new items of furniture.

Paint spray or recover

Usually, all you really need to do is to change the colouring to make the whole room come together. With a sofa and chairs that usually means re-covering them. Something that is a lot easier to do now because there are a lot more firms selling replacement covers for the most popular brands and models.

With wooden items like tables, sideboards and dining room chairs painting or re-spraying them is the way to go. Re-finishing them ensures that they blend in with the new colour palette and has the added benefit of covering up any wear and tear.
