Creating Easter baskets and memories for children #cbias

March 23, 2013

Every Easter when I was a child my mam would buy us all a new outfit, our Easter clothes as she would call them. Usually the week before Easter we would head off into town to find the perfect outfit. My older sister would always complain if our outfits did not cost the same and demand the difference. My mam of course would say no, it’s not about the cost. Then over Easter weekend we would call into my Nanna’s (she wasn’t my real Nanna but she always treated us like her grandchildren) house to collect our Easter bag.

Our Easter bag would be a sandwich bag containing an orange, an apple, a boiled egg (we would never eat the egg… yuck) and a £1 coin. I can remember being pleased as punch to receive this gift and it must have meant something to me otherwise I would never have remembered it all these years later. I couldn’t tell you how many Easter eggs I received or if my friends had more than me, just my new outfit and my Nanna’s Easter bag.

Keeping with this tradition I have always bought Roo and Tigger a new outfit for Easter rather than getting them an Easter egg. However, this year I thought I would start a new tradition of an Easter basket/bag. At first I wondered what I could put in it to make it memorable, I immediately decided not to include the boiled egg!

Needing inspiration I thought I’d hop online (see what I did there?), many online stores didn’t offer what I was looking for under one roof (so to speak). It was only when I stumbled onto the Asda website that I saw their Happy Easter Landing page and managed to find inspiration.
Their ‘Entertain the Kids’ section proved most helpful in giving me ideas of what I could include the Easter baskets. From books, toys, crafts and baking there was a great selection with ideas for Easter Egg hunts and kid’s crafts too.
So after a trip to my local Asda to pick up some goodies it was time to put my baskets together. I opted to buy ready made baskets as I wasn’t too sure where I’d get time to make the ‘make your own’ version (#mummyfail, maybe next year!).

With the other items I purchased I’ve decided to do a little Easter egg hunt with them, so I’ve hidden Roo and Tigger’s Easter treats around the house and  I’m planning that before I go to bed to place the ‘find me eggs’ around the house. I really hope they have fun and that I remember where I have hidden everything (I only just found a Christmas present that I’d hid away for Roo last week).

To get into the spirit of Easter I thought we’d make the cake kit that I’d bought. Roo really loves to bake and I wish we could do it more often, I’ve not attempted to let Tigger bake with us yet… not sure I could cope with that mess!

Anyway, Roo wanted to make the cakes to take with us to see Nanny and Granddad. I love these ready packaged sets, so easy… add an egg, add some water, add a little butter, mix and Bob’s your uncle ready to add to the cake cases and pop in the oven.

Now we all know the best part about baking is getting to lick the spoon…

One thing I was a little worried about this cake mix set is that it came with mix for a buttercream topping, I cannot make buttercream. Don’t ask me why I have no idea what I do wrong I follow the instructions and everytime it goes wrong. Mr Boo has even watched me to see if I’m doing something I shouldn’t be but no. With no icing sugar hiding in the cupboard I was forced into using the mix… Add mix, add butter, add water and whisk. ‘Hang on’ I thought… it’s starting to look like buttercream! OMG I made buttercream! I don’t know who was more excited Roo or me.

After icing and decorating they looked fabulous (if we do say so ourselves)… the proof in the pudding is the tasting, yum, yum…

Cakes done, Easter treats hidden… Hurry up Easter Bunny!
I can’t wait to see what Roo and Tigger make of their Easter baskets.
Do you make Easter baskets? if so, what do you include?
