When we move home later this year one of my aims is to have a home office or at the very least space where I can have a desk and space to keep all my blog/freelance work together. Currently, I am either perched on the end of the sofa or sat at the dining table.
As I’m often trying to complete my blog work between household tasks, school runs or Piglet’s nap times I often have to drop everything and come back to it later – which would be fine in a home office as I can close the door and not worry about the mess (to some extent), however when I’m at the dining table for example, everything is gathered up in a pile and placed on the bookcase ready for my next attempt at getting some work completed.

Creating a home office
With my hopes for a more productive environment to work in I have been gathering ideas on creating a home for when we do have the space available in our new home.
Desk
As I’m not likely to have a large amount of space to play with in my home office I need a desk that can incorporate a number of functions to enable me to get the best from the space available. I’ve looked at many different desk ideas, whether to go with one with drawers below, a sit on top unit to allow me to have my notebooks etc to hand.
The one that I keep coming back to is the IKEA KALLAX combination desk. I like the idea that I can keep my files, notebooks and props tidy on the shelves whilst still being able to access them easily.
The large desk area would allow space for a laptop, paperwork, lamp and accessories whilst also being a great surface to take photographs on when my laptop etc is stored on the shelves.
Chair
As an administrator in my day job, I am all too aware of the need for a good chair to sit upon whilst working at a desk. Whilst I won’t be putting in full days at my desk I do need something that is practical and comfortable – and possibly looks great too.
Wayfair has a great selection of desk chairs available and the Mid-Back Task chair from Homcom has caught my eye. It looks comfortable with a padded seat and back rest, as well as adjustable which is always good especially for a vertically challenged person such as myself. It looks stylish too although I’m slightly worried about how practical a white chair is in a house full of children so might need to see if I can get this is black.
Accessories
I’m a self-confessed stationery addict, I love nothing more than treating myself to a new notebook or coloured pen (so you can see why I became an administrator). Whilst the world is slowly going paperless I do believe that there is a place for paperwork, lists and handwriting. None more so than when you are attempting to be an organised person.
Organisation is the key to freelance work and I need to ensure that I have all my deadlines noted down and visible so I can see what needs to be completed first. I’ve found a great rainbow combination noticeboard from Teacher Boards that will give space for lists, notices etc. whilst also having space to write messages, deadlines and reminders on – all whilst looking funky in the range of bright colours (who said that notice boards had to be boring?).
Decoration
With the hope of a room dedicated to a home office, it needs to be a room that is functional yet inviting. A cold, stark looking room will not entice creative work so making the room feel warm will hopefully aid task management and deadlines to be met.
Having that feature wall that is decorated with a colour or wallpaper that you love will make the space feel like your own and give you something nice to look at whilst you are working. I love the Lucienne Purple Floral Wallpaper from B&Q, the beautiful deep purple scattered with different flowers hat almost look like fireworks.
With a few inspiration quotes framed and placed on the plain walls I think it will make for an inviting place to work.
