How To Connect With Your Child During The Busy School Year

After a summer of having the children at home, back to school can make us all feel a little disconnected from each other. Our kids spend so much time in school, participating in sports and activities, and just the everyday hurried parts of life. During the busy school year, it can often feel like we never get to see our children let alone truly connect with them. So it’s important that we make an effort to connect with our children during the busy school year.

There are simple everyday things that we can show them that we are there for them. Thinking of them and showing that we love them. Take a look at the ideas below on how you can ensure that you connect with your child(ren) during the busy school year.

Make a point to eat as a family as much as possible

This quality time can be hard to come by with a busy schedule but each opportunity you get is a chance to sit and talk with your child. This can be as simple as a picnic before sports practice or as big as a full-blown home-cooked meal. The point is to spend time with your child. Ask them about their day, what was good, what wasn’t so good – open up the conversation and let them know that you are ready to listen.

Dive into your child’s interests to get more time with them

If your child is into sports show up to volunteer. If your child is in art or band spend time helping them create or listening to them practice. Even if your child is busy they will see you making the effort to connect to them and what they care about.

Write your child notes to leave in their backpack or lunch box

Something as simple as “I am so proud of you” on a sticky note can make your child feel loved.

Play a quick game together

Even if all you have time for is a round of noughts and crosses on the back of a notebook that small effort can go a long way.

Help your child with their homework

While this can be easier said than done taking time to help your child with homework helps you connect while taking the stress off of your child. Make it more fun by bringing your child a snack when you sit down and work with them.

Take your child with you to run errands

This is a great way to get one on one time with your child when everyone is so busy. you get time to connect with your child while still getting things done.

Just a few simple ways that you can show that you are there for them, even with the busy school year and the hecticness of life happening around you both.
