Some people are scared of snakes. But Anna knows it’s brilliant having a snake as a friend, and soon everyone else will too!

It can be easy to be frightened of something unknown, especially when that unknown is a snake who happens to be Anna’s friend. To many Otis is something to scared of, something to step away from. However, with the help of his friend Anna the world around him starts to accept that maybe he isn’t scary after all.

Will people ever learn to accept a snake as a friend?

Anna and Otis the snake are great friends and they love having fun together. But Otis the snake knows people are scared of snakes, so he usually just plays at home or in the garden. He is nervous when Anna suggests a new adventure.

At first, people are afraid, and Otis feels he isn’t welcome in the town. But Anna encourages Otis not to give up, and it soon turns out that maybe snakes aren’t as scary as people thought.

This sounds like a nice book. When I was a child we lived in different countries as my father worked in foreign aid. I had my 9th birthday in Singapore, and my parents hired a traditional magician called a “gully gully man”. He did lots of tricks, and he also brought several snakes with him, including a cobra which did a routine with a mongoose, and a python which he offered to let us hold. It was very heavy and surprisingly warm, not at all slippery as you might expect. I’m sure this entertainment would not be allowed now for health and safety reasons, but I’ve never forgotten that birthday party.
