When I was 14 years old I attended an Air Cadet training camp at RAF Henlow. Whilst I was there I met one of my oldest friends who lives in Manchester. From the moment we returned home we became pen pals and to this day send each other letters. Whilst the letters aren’t exchanged as frequently as they once were. I do, however, still love to write to her and tell her all about what’s new with me, about the children and to share my worries. In turn, there is something so wonderful about seeing a handwritten envelope on the mat behind the day amongst the boring brown envelopes containing bills.

Securing the top spot in a thoroughly regal fashion was Her Majesty, The Queen. Her Royal Highness, currently sends out a select number of letters every year to the British public for occasions such as 100th birthdays and milestone wedding anniversaries – a tradition dating back to 1917.
Known for world-famous quotes from the 37 plays he wrote, dramatist William Shakespeare took second place, and with his unmistakable voice, the nation’s favourite broadcaster and naturalist, David Attenborough, came in at number three.
The research, from the No. 1 stationery group in Europe, Africa, Latin America and India, BIC, revealed that the top 10 people Brits would like to receive a handwritten letter from are:

- William Shakespeare
- David Attenborough
- Stephen Fry
- Elvis
- Julius Caesar
- David Bowie
- J.K Rowling
- Marilyn Monroe
- Beyoncé
Personally, this would be a hard decision for me. Obviously, I’d love a letter from The Queen, hoping that she would be inviting me to one of her famous garden parties. However, I think I’d choose my favourite author Jane Austen so I could see her penmanship and ask about her novels. Although thinking of Jane Austen, I’d probably love to receive a letter from Miss Elizabeth Bennett (or Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy), so she could update me on married life with Mr. Darcy. Her thoughts on living at Pemberley and whether Lady Catherine ever visits.
