A couple of years ago we renovated the upstairs of our home. We replaced the doors, woodwork, replastered and laid new carpets – alongside this we decorated Roo’s bedroom as she had only ever had magnolia walls beforehand so she finally received the pink bedroom she had always wanted.
Now that she has just turned nine she has officially entered the tween years and whilst she is still happy with her pink walls she would like to update her bedroom to make it look a little more grown up. So I have been looking at ways to update a tweens bedroom.

5 ways to update a tweens bedroom
1. Bedding
Children tend to go through phases when it come to bedding depending on which music band/film/TV character is their favourite at the time. Over the years we have had the Peppa Pig and In the Night Garden phase, which moved onto Hello Kitty and One Direction. Now Roo is ready for something a little more grown up whilst still looking ‘cute’.
Having looked at the different children’s bedding sets available I persuaded her to go for something that wasn’t based on a film or the latest pop group instead opting for something that is more timeless and can be accessorized in different ways.
I’ve just bought Roo this lovely girls festival camper van bedding and curtains set which I think is super cute and I love that we can pull out the different colours to add accents around her room.
2. Lighting
Both Roo and Tigger have always had night lights in their bedrooms since they were babies (they don’t like it when it is pitch black). Whilst character shaped night lights offer that fun factor to a younger child’s bedroom they are deemed ‘too babyish’ for a tweens room.
On a recent trip to IKEA we managed to pick up their KAJUTA table lamp to add to Roo’s updated bedroom. With a switch on the cable it makes it easy and safe for Roo to switch on and off by herself. The slits on the side of the lamp can be bent in and out to allow more light to shine through. Available in a choice of colours it allows you to select the one that is most suited to your colour scheme.
3. Storage
Personally I don’t think you can ever have too much storage especially in a child’s bedroom. By adding additional storage boxes in the way of under bed baskets, box files or some shelving it will hopefully encourage them to keep the space tidy as well as organised.
Roo has a large collection of Jacqueline Wilson magazines that she has collected over the years and her box files are bursting at the seems so we have chosen some collapsible storage boxes that were on a 2 for £10 offer to house the older editions of the magazine freeing up space on her desk for the new editions plus hopefully enabling her to complete her homework there too.
4. Decoration
Completely redecorating a child’s bedroom can be costly and time-consuming however if they are happy with the base colour on their walls then you can easily transform the space by adding framed quotes, postcards or posters. These will brighten up the space whilst making it more personal and possibly inspirational too if you select the right quotes to include.
Roo and I have been looking through the quote prints and found several ones that we have ordered to be added to her room. I’m personally loving the ‘What if I fall’ print, we are all nervous about trying new things and experiences but if we never try we might never fly.
5. Soft furnishings
Updating the little soft furnishings that finish off a room like a new rug, some comfy cushions and a snuggly throw will help transform the room. These little bits and pieces can help tie in the new bedding, quotes, storage solutions and lighting to give the room a uniform look without breaking the bank.
Roo loves to sit in her room reading books, watching a film or when she has her friends over chatting until the small hours of the morning so adding some comfortable seating options was important. Whilst we were out looking in a furniture store recently Roo spotted a knitted foot stool that she loved but it was out of our price range, however I’ve managed to find her one on Amazon for a fraction of the price and it’s purple too.
