5 ways to give your bathroom a new lease of life

September 10, 2018

We’re well out of spring cleaning season and now as autumn hits, many of us turn our attention to home renovations. While it would be great to find the funds to update every room in the house, our savings accounts often don’t allow it.

Yet, giving your home a fresh new look doesn’t have to cost the earth. Sometimes a few simple, savvy touches can make all the difference. There’s no doubt about it. Even if you’re super frugal, redesigning and installing a new bathroom suite costs quite the packet. The main fixtures can soon add up, and that’s without all the plumbing and fitting that goes along with it.

But before you get too disheartened, stand back and reassess. Sometimes it’s perfectly possible to refresh without renovating entirely. You can uplift your living spaces without stripping everything back to basics. And your bathroom is the ideal place to put such plans into action.

Let’s take a look at five simple and cost-efficient ways to give your home bathroom or en-suite the TLC it deserves.

1. Go over the tile grout

Do you really need to fork out funds for new tiling? Or could you, in fact, lift the room by tidying up your existing tiles? After time tile grout loses its fresh, clean look and becomes so discoloured that even deep cleaning can’t fix it. Rather than tearing away at the walls, simply regrout or even create clean lines with a cheap and cheerful grout pen.

2. Fit new shower panels

If you’ve got an amount of cash to invest but you’re not sure where it’s best placed, my suggestion is updating your existing shower panel. Modern multi-function shower towers and waterfall heads can really give your bathroom a luxury feel, without the unbearable burden of long-term finance. Again, a simple solution that will see that your bathroom oozes class.

3. Make way for new mirrors

You already have one. Everyone does. But take a look at your options because, when it comes to bathroom mirrors, bigger is better. If you have wall space to add a larger mirror to your bathroom this will bring light into the room and create the allusion of additional space.

4. Replace wooden finishings

As with that grubby grout, wooden finishings are often a key culprit in tired-looking bathrooms. It makes sense, really. After all, water and wood just don’t mix. In time, no matter how you condition end panels, wood will begin to look worn, perhaps even rotten. The good news is that wooden finishings can be replaced fairly cost effectively.

5. Add to the aesthetic

As well as doing all our mundane grooming in the bathroom, it’s also an area we use to relax. Inject some beauty and calm with candles, houseplants, and maybe even a new accessory set. Oh, those bath trays that hold your book and your wine glass? Well, they’re an essential purchase. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

There you have it, five simple and cost-effective ways to give your bathroom a new lease of life.
