Conversations with a 5 year old - Palm tree

Upon picking Roo up from school this afternoon she was carrying a palm tree:

Me: What's that?
Roo: It's a palm tree, what do you think it is? scotch mist?

Enough said!

My @Slimavite Journey - Week 21 (#MUMenTUM)

Slimavite
Starting weight: 12st 2lb (31/10/11)
Weight: 11st 3lb (2lb loss)

What a difference a week can make.  I have managed to lose the 2lb's I gain last week and more importantly the bloating I was feeling has also gone.

I re-read last week post and giggled to myself, I really should have written:

'Hello my name is Boo, and I'm addicted to fizzy pop!'

Thankfully I have managed to ditch this and I think this why I don't feel as bloated as I did.  The first few days weren't nice with my body craving the sugar  and the caffeine, I felt really tired and head-achy.  I have however broken my makeshift bottle so really need to find a better solution (anyone have any recommendations?).

Warning, the following passage may include information about me you didn't want to know!

Something I have noticed this week is my change in body shape.  I have now lost my baby boobs.  I have never really had much of a chest so to speak and it was only when I became pregnant with Tigger that they increased substantially.  Whilst I enjoyed having a larger chest, this does come with its own problems.  Finding bras is a nightmare (I really feel for all you larger breasted ladies), you need to wear at least a size larger top than required and trying to find a comfortable sleeping position is very difficult.

So with my newly slimmed down boobs I went shopping for a new top to wear to an upcoming family wedding.  After trying on the size 14 and finding it too baggy I thought I'd try the size 12 (yes, I said size 12!).  To my amazement it fitted... woohoo! (if only my bum and hips would catch up!).

With my happiness of getting into a size 12 top, Mr Boo treated me to a new summer coat for Mother's Day in a size 12 too!

Apologies for the amount of times I have said size 12, but if can't guess I'm sooo happy about it!!!

Hope the rest of my Slimavite and MUMenTUM ladies have had a good week!

REVIEW: I CAN Babble, Listen & Understand

I CAN
When I was pregnant with Tigger I often thought about what he would like.  Roo is very talkative and has been from an early age.  If she needs/wants to say something she is not afraid to let the world know.  This got me thinking about little Tigger, would he be quiet because he couldn't get a word in or would he be twice as loud in order to he heard?

I like to think that he has landed somewhere in the middle of the two extremes.  Certainly when Roo is at school he babbles away to me much more and especially as I have now limited his dummy to sleeping only.  Saying this if he gets frustrated he can really make himself heard if need be.

With the four year age gap between Roo and Tigger is hard for me to remember exactly how many words Roo was saying at what age but I do feel that Tigger doesn't say as much as Roo did at this age.

When I was offered the chance to review two activity packs from I CAN, which aims to develop children's speaking, listening and understanding skills I jumped at the chance.

There are two activity packs available:

BABBLING BABIES
Babbling Babies is a beautifully illustrated activity pack to promote communication development of babies from birth to 18 months old. Learning to talk is the number one life skill for the 21st century. Communication is vital in making friends, letting people know how you feel and keeping you safe. Later, it helps in learning, knowing how to behave and getting on in school.
New babies are geared up to communicate, they do this when they let you know that they are hungry, uncomfortable or tired. How you respond to them will teach them the skills that they need to turn these cries into words then sentences over the next two years. Babbling Babies includes 30 inspiring activities for parents and adults to play and develop a baby’s communication skills.
The activities have been developed by practitioners with specialist experience in developing communication with under threes. Each activity has an idea for babies from birth to 6 months, 6 – 12 months and 12 – 18 months. The activities are focused on the following 5 areas:
  1. Playing and interacting
  2. Learning to Listen
  3. Learning and understanding new words
  4. Expressing myself
  5. Exploring and developing

TODDLER TALK
Toddler Talk is a beautifully illustrated activity pack to promote communication development of toddlers from 18 months to 3 years old that now comes in a paperback and hardback edition.
Toddler Talk includes 35 inspiring activities on durable cards for parents and other adults to play with the toddler to develop the toddler's communication skills. The activities have been developed by practitioners with specialist experience in developing communication with under threes. The activities are focused on the following five areas:
  1. Attention and Listening
  2. Understanding what is said
  3. Learning and using new words
  4. Building sentences
  5. Talking socially
Toddlers need the space and time to process sounds and to learn what they mean. Eventually, words build into sentences, into mini-conversations and this means that children will be able to get the best of their new learning environments.

Each pack some with a suggested 6 week activity plan, which I think is great. I am someone who likes routine, plan activities etc so for me this perfect.  Although for all you easy going parents you can simply flick through the activities and see which one takes your fancy.

The Babbling Babies activities are split into three age groups, which I think is fantastic.  As your little one grows and develops the activity also develops along with them.

I have only read through the Toddler Talk activity pack as Tigger is not quite ready for it just yet, so can't tell you how we got one.  However I have spotted some fun activities in there and will enjoy doing these in the summer months.

Available:
Home
Hardback - £12.99 or Paperback - £6.99
(I would recommend the hardback copy as you can keep all the activity cards in a handy box)

As many of you will know at the beginning of the year I signed up to two photo challenges - Mamatography and 366.  I love taking photos and nearly always have a camera with me wherever I go.  There is one side to photography that I do not like... editing!

Now this is not because I don't want to edit them, improve them or make the best of them... it's because I have never really been shown how best to do this.  So when the lovely people at MAGIX contacted me and asked if I would like to give their photo editing software a try out I jumped at the chance.

My Entry

Heaven means something different to everyone, it maybe shoes, handbags, chocolate.  With this in mind I went off searching Pinterest and came across the image below.  I loved this image, the stairway to heaven.  I love the colours, the way I wonder what is at the top of the stairs... I would love this made into a canvas.

Thank goodness for the NHS

We all moan about our NHS, myself included and I work for them! However I don't think we always appreciate how lucky we really are.

I was reading on another blog the other week about how in Ireland is costs so much money to attend the doctors and then get a prescription filled that she really had to think about whether or not it was a necessity to see a doctor (I'm really sorry I can't remember the name but if this sounds like your post please let me know and I'll edit).

I'm sure that I am not alone in thinking that if our children (and sometimes ourselves, although this is rare) are ill I wouldn't hesitate in ringing the doctors to book an appointment.  Maybe we have all become to reliant on the NHS and see it as our right to see a doctor and get medications whenever we feel we need to.

Should we think twice before picking up the phone and booking that appointment?

Have we spoken with the Pharmacist in the chemist to see if there is any over the counter medications we could try first?

This being said I know that the NHS is not perfect, I too have had my fair share of medical nightmares.  However I do still believe that having a NHS is good for our country and I wouldn't like to see us all having to have private healthcare insurance like you do in so many other countries.

I do believe that the NHS bracket should include eye tests for all and dental check ups including emergency dental treatment.

How do you feel about our NHS?
Do feel we are lucky or inflicted?
